Scout Report - Tommy McNamara

Houston Dynamo completed their first major off-season signing with the capture of former New York City FC midfielder Tommy McNamara during the MLS re-entry draft on December 11th, 2018, giving the Club exclusive rights to negotiate the players contract.

Please find below a quote from Houston Dynamo General Manager Matt Jordan on the signing of Tommy McNamara:
Tommy joins our club in the prime of his career with a strong desire to contribute to the success of the Houston Dynamo,” said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “His strong mentality, high soccer IQ, and ability to play a variety of positions in the attacking third will strengthen our group as we prepare for a busy 2019.

THE HISTORY

Lemina joined American side Chivas USA during the 2014 MLS Super Draft and was officially signed by Chivas on 14th February 2014.
He made 6 league appearances during the 2014 season before tearing his ACL which ended his 2014 season early, as it required surgery.
After Chivas USA got liquidated Tommy McNamara was first selected by DC United during the MLS Dispersal Draft. DC United would though leave Tommy McNamara unprotected and thus New York City FC would select him as their 8th pick during their Expansion Draft.
Tommy McNamara would score his first goal on June 6th 2015 - the goal would get goal of the week. McNamara would make 86 appearances and score 13 goals in his time with New York City FC. In 2015 while at New York City FC, McNamara would spend a year on loan with Willington Hammerheads.

THE PROSPECTS

While McNamara is a versatile player, having featured as a winger and midfielder, it’s likely that he’ll be used as a box-to-box midfielder by Houston Dynamo.
The new boy is a physical presence who can thrive in the middle of the park, and is a strong ball-winner – he completed 71% of his attempted tackles while he was playing for New York City FC.
McNamara also boasts good stamina and is able to break forward at pace with the ball at his feet.
He can keep things ticking over with both short and long passes and looks the ideal partner for the hard-working Beasley in Cabrera’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.
The USA international does have a reputation for being a bit of a hot head, though, with his limited pitch-time in recent seasons perhaps not accurately depicting his tendency to draw reaction from match officials.
The club-record signing is expected to be priced at 7.0 in Major League Soccer (FMLS), with his arrival more significant from a defensive perspective if he and Beasley can form a solid shield in front of the back four.
